Georgia City Parks - Inman Park

button-parkmap.GIF (1969 bytes)

Freedom Park
As you read this, The Freedom Park Conservancy / CAUTION, Inc. ("FPC") and PATH Foundation will be in the middle of constructing the north-south Greenway Trail running from the Inman Park MARTA Station (at DeKalb Avenue) to Ponce de Leon Avenue and related landscaping improvements that are being done as part of Phase II of Freedom Park’s development. Feeder trails will connect to many neighborhood streets providing access for everyone near the Park.

DHG, Inc. was the successful bidder for hardscape work. Valleycrest was chosen to complete the landscaping portion of the project. Both hardscapes and landscaping will be completed early next year.

The north-south leg of the Freedom Park Trail will intersect the existing trail at N. Highland Avenue. The southern segment will join the existing trail just south of the Carter Center. Most importantly, the Inman Park MARTA station will be connected to Virginia-Highlands, Poncey Highlands, Candler Park, Druid Hills, and the Inman Park neighborhoods. The Georgia DOT even left space for the trail to cross Ponce de Leon at Freedom Park and continue toward St. Charles Avenue. These neighborhoods will be the first in Atlanta to be connected to rail transit with a multi-use trail.

Greenway Trail
The East-West stretch of the Atlanta-Dekalb Greenway Trail System, through Feedom Park (see map), became an instant hit. Even before the construction barricades were removed, cyclists, joggers, roller bladers and stollers swarmed over the switchbacks and straight-a-ways. This accomplishment of the PATH Foundation is part of a extensive system of designated streets and off-road trails - including the Silver Comet, a stretch of paved, off-road trail which will connect Atlanta and Birmingham, AL.

Freedom Park is undergoing its next phase with the addition of the North - South trail section through the park. The Freedom Park Conservancy and PATH are working together to build the additional trail segment which will begin at Ponce de Leon and end at the Inman Park MARTA station. This trail will enable trail users to take advantage of the MARTA system while touring Atlanta's newest major park
