Overview
Hart State Park was built
by the Corps of Engineers and opened in 1968 as a recreation facility. Located on
Lake Hartwell reservoir, the park offers access to 56,000 acres of lake waters and 962
miles of shoreline extending into South Carolina. The park lands were once farms and
homesites until the building of the Hartwell Dam on the Savannah River. The park is
located just 1 1/2 miles north of Hartwell city limits, convenient to shopping centers and
restaurants. The park is eight miles, by water, from the dam. The clear waters
of Lake Hartwell offer park visitors unlimited fishing opportunities as well as a
playground for boating, skiing, swimming and other watersports. Largemouth bass,
striped bass, hybrid bass, catfish, black crappie, bluegill, bream, walleyed pike and more
can be found in the lake.
Park lands consist of 147
acres of rolling hills, lightly forested with hardwoods and pines. Approximately 2.3
miles of shoreline offer lake access from both the day-use and camping areas. Park
property borders the main channel of Lightwood Log Creek, two semi-private coves and the
channel across from the marina.
