Recreation & Cultural Activities
Stone County is an area rich in natural beauty and resources. There is an abundant supply
of game and fish for those who wish to enjoy nature. The lakes and rivers offer excellent
fishing for bass, bream, crappie, and catfish. The forests abound in deer, turkey, quail,
rabbits, squirrels, and birds.
Flint Creek Water Park

The Flint Creek Water Park is one of eight parks in the Pat Harrison Waterway District
which stretches throughout South Mississippi. There is 1,900 total acres inside the park
boundaries with a 650-acre lake included. The park administers a water slide area
appropriately named Water Town which is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day of
each year. Recently the park opened eight new cabins, thus increasing its total to 40
cabins. The park also maintains 127 Class A campsites, 40 Primitive campsites, and 131 RV
hookups. Marina facilities, excellent fishing, boating and a large picnic area with
beaches are available on the lake, which is considered one of the top water parks in the
state. The Flint Creek Water Park also hosts an annual 4th of July fireworks show and
annual Haunted Forest. Park Manger Shane Rogers conservatively estimates that at least
600,000 visitors come to the water park each year. There are numerous lakes in the county
from 50-150 acres that abound in bass, crappie and bream.

Other Creeks and Wildlife Areas
Red Creek and Black Creek offer excellent day and overnight float trips, and both creeks
are designated Wild and Scenic Rivers. The U.S. Forest Service maintains landings and
hiking trails on Black Creek. There are two game reserves in Stone County: Red Creek and
Biloxi Creek. Deer, turkey, quail, squirrel, and rabbit hunting abound throughout the
county on a seasonal basis. The Pascagoula Game and Wildlife Management Area is located
just 30 miles from Wiggins. With its oxbow lakes and cypress swamps, it is one of the most
beautiful and breath-taking areas in the South. A portion of the DeSoto National Forest is
also located in Stone County. The forest offers a controlled game reserve for hunting and
numerous nature trails. Also, fifteen minutes north of Wiggins is the Paul B. Johnson
State Park, which offers cabins, camping sites, swimming, fishing, boating, and
picnicking.
Sports, Parks, and Playgrounds
Wiggins and Stone County operate a year-round sports program with seasonal offerings in
softball, baseball, soccer, basketball, little league football and other activities. Many
of the countys youth sporting events are conducted at Hood Field, a multi-plex of
baseball, softball, and soccer fields. The Blaylock Park, in downtown Wiggins, offers a
walking-jogging park, lighted tennis courts, exercise and playground equipment, and two
open pavilions. The walking track is eight feet wide and a quarter mile long. The track is
well lighted for nightwalkers. The park was built in large part by contributions from area
merchants and citizens.
Also, professional spectator sports such as championship boxing, professional ice hockey,
and professional football are nearby in New Orleans, Biloxi, and Mobile.
Pine Burr Country Club
The Pine Burr Country Club offers golf, tennis, swimming, and fishing to its members and
guests. An 18-hole golf course is open to the public for daily green fees, and is
considered one of the top courses in South Mississippi. The facility also offers a driving
range, golf lessons, club repair, and a beautiful clubhouse for special occasions.
Library
The Stone County Public Library, located in Wiggins, is part of the 15-member Pine Belt
Regional Library System. It offers approximately 15,000 volumes and maintains a branch in
the community of McHenry. The Library is housed in a modern 4,876 square foot building at
242 South Second Street S.E. The Library has two large rooms, which are available for
public meetings and exhibitions.
