New York City Parks

The Bronx is 24% parklands--that’s a greater percentage of green space than any other urban area in the country. Below are just some of the great parks you’ll find in the Bronx. Bronx Zoo
Address:  185th Street & Southern Blvd. Bronx, NY 10460

Hours:  Opens at 10 am 365 days a year. Closes on weekdays at 5 pm; closes on weekends & holidays at 5:30 pm (closes at 4:30 pm every day November – January) During winter months, rides and Children’s Zoo are closed.
Admission:  $9.00 for adults, $4.00 for children aged 2-12 and seniors. Wednesdays are free for everyone except during the holiday season (Early November – January) when admission is $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for children aged 2-12 and seniors. There are additional fees for some rides, exhibits and the Children’s Zoo.
Description:  The largest metropolitan zoo in the United States, the Bronx Zoo has more than 6,000 animals and award-winning exhibits like Jungle World , an amazing indoor rain forest where Asian gibbons, hornbills, tapirs and many other rare species thrive. Journey to the Himalayas is home to red pandas, snow leopards and white-naped cranes. One of the most exciting exhibits is the new Congo Gorilla Forest where you can get nose-to-nose with Western lowland gorillas. The Bronx Zoo is also the heart of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s work to save wildlife and wild places around the globe. Don’t miss Holiday Lights at the Zoo, an amazing, dazzling display of animals in lights and family fun activities like marshmallow roasting and ice sculpture demonstrations.
Directions:  Subway #2 to Pelham Parkway or #5 to East 180th Street and transfer to #2; or Metro-North commuter rail to Fordham Road, then bus BX12 to Southern Blvd or BX9 (toward West Farms Square) to 185th Street & Southern Blvd. Also buses BX19 to 185th Street & Southern Blvd or BX22 to Boston Road & Bronx Park East and Q44 (from Queens). Also Liberty Lines Express Bus BXM11 stops at entrance to Zoo.

Crotona Park
Address:  Crotona Avenue & Claremont Pkwy. Bronx, NY
Description:  The centerpiece of this popular park is Indian Lake, where kids go to sail model boats. In August, Crotona Park is the site of the Bronx Tennis Classic, a professional competition of top seeded players.
Directions:  Subway #2 or #5 to Prospect Avenue, then bus BX 17 towards Fordham Plaza which goes right into the park

Joyce Kilmer Park
Address:  Grand Concourse & 161st Street Bronx, NY
Description:  Named after the American author and poet best known for his poem “Trees”, Joyce Kilmer Park sits across from the Bronx County Building and is a hub of year-round activity. Its centerpiece is the Heinrich Hein Fountain (also called the Lorelei Fountain) beautifully restored in 1999.
Directions:  Subway D or #4 or Liberty Lines Express Bus BXM4A or BXM4B to Yankee Stadium stop (161 Street); buses BX1, BX6, BX13

New York Botanical Garden
Address:  200th Street & Southern Blvd. Bronx, NY 10458

Hours:  Year-round: Tues – Sun & holidays falling on Mon; April – Oct: 10 am – 6 pm. Nov – March: 10 am – 4pm. Some specialty gardens are seasonal.
Admission:  To Garden: $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for students & seniors, $1.00 for children 2 –12; free for children under 2. Free admission on Wednesdays & from 10 am – 12 pm on Sat. To Conservatory: $3.50 for adults, $2.50 for seniors, $2.00 for children 2 – 12, free for children under 2. Some specialty gardens have separate admission fees; please call for information and to learn about special savings with a Garden Passport.
Description:  A national historic landmark, the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) occupies 250 acres, 40 of which are pre-settlement forest. NYBG features 27 outdoor gardens and plant collections and the nation’s most beautiful Victorian conservatory, the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, a beautiful crystal palace that is home to exotic plants from around the world. Other special sites to visit are the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden and the T.H. Everett Rock Garden. And don’t miss the narrated tram and golf cart tours. NYBG is especially magical during the holidays, when the Victorian Train Show transforms the Conservatory into a timeless wonderland.
Directions:  Subway #4 or D to Bedford Park Blvd, then walk or take bus BX26 to Garden. Or Metro-North to the NY Botanical Garden stop. There’s also a shuttle bus service from Manhattan Fri - Sun, April – Oct and Sat in Nov & Dec; please call for reservations. Also bus BX41 or BX19 to Bedford Park Blvd.

Orchard Beach
Address:  Pelham Bay Park Bronx, NY 10465

Description:  Built in the 1930s, this mile-long beach is the borough’s most popular summertime meeting place. There’s a boardwalk for people-watching, a band shell where weekend concerts are held, and tennis, paddleball and basketball courts.
Directions:  Subway #6 or NY Express Bus/Pelham Bay to Pelham Bay Park, then bus BX12 to the beach (summer only). A great option: Take your bicycle on the #6 subway to Pelham Bay station, then ride the Greenway path to the beach.

Pelham Bay Park
Address:  Stadium Avenue & Middletown Road Bronx, NY
Description:  Three times the size of Central Park, Pelham Bay is easily New York City’s largest park. Beautiful bike paths, picnic areas, tennis courts, driving ranges, horseback riding and open playing fields are some of the things that draw locals and visitors alike.
Directions:  Subway #6 or NY Express Bus to Pelham Bay station & walk across pedestrian overpass into the park.

Poe Park
Address:  Grand Concourse & Kingsbridge Road Bronx, NY
Description:  Centrally located on the famous Grand Concourse, it’s where you can visit Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, the final residence of the American literary master.
Directions:  Subway #4 or D to Kingsbridge Road or bus BX1, BX2, BX9, BX28

Van Cortlandt Park
Address:  Broadway & W. 242nd Street Bronx, NY
Description:  One of New York City’s loveliest parks, it can best be explored via the John Muir Hiking Trail. There’s also swimming, horseback riding, and handball and tennis courts. Every summer Van Cortlandt Park is the site of a free performance by the New York City Philharmonic Orchestra.
Directions:  Take subway #1 to 242 Street or #4 to Kingsbridge Road then Bus BX9 to 244th Street. Also Liberty Lines Express Bus BXM3 and #1 or #2 Westchester Bee Line buses

Wave Hill
Address:  675 West 252nd Street (by Independence Avenue) Bronx, NY 10471

Hours:  Grounds: October 15-April 14: Tue s- Sun 9 am – 4:30 pm. April 15-October 14: Tues - Sun 9 am – 5:30 pm. Open late on Wednesdays in June and July. Closed on Mondays year-round. Wave Hill House & Glyndor Gallery: Tues - Sun 10 am – 4:30 pm.
Admission:  Free to everyone Nov 15 – March 14: Tues - Sun. March 15- Nov 14: $4 for adults, $2 for seniors & students. Free for children under 6. Admission free on Tues & Sat 9 am – 12 pm.
Description:  With its breathtaking views of the Hudson River, Wave Hill’s 28 acres of gardens, woodlands, historic buildings and greenhouses serve as laboratory and gallery. The institution is dedicated to interpreting the complex interaction that occurs between human beings and their natural surroundings and fostering public understanding of it. Programs in horticulture and landscape design, urban woodland management and the arts are offered to a wide audience. Wave Hill House is the center of the estate and the former residence of Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt and Arturo Toscanini.
Directions:  Metro North commuter rail to Riverdale station, then a pleasant but uphill walk or the Rail Link bus (weekdays only). Subway #1 or #9 to 231st Street, then bus BX7 or BX10. Or take the A train to last stop (207 Street) and then bus BX7 to 252nd Street and follow signs to Wave Hill. Also Liberty Lines Express Bus BXM1 or BXM2 to 252nd Street.
